The Abbey- Chris Culver

Ash Rashid is a former homicide detective who can t stand the thought of handling another death investigation. In another year, he ll be out of the department completely. That s the plan, at least, until his niece s body is found in the guest home of one of his city s most wealthy citizens. The coroner calls it an overdose, but the case doesn t add up. Against orders, Ash launches an investigation to find his niece s murderer, but the longer he searches, the more entangled he becomes in a case that hits increasingly close to home. If he doesn t solve it fast, his niece won t be the only family member he has to bury.
I was originally attracted to this inexpensive Kindle book by a negative review. The reviewer (amidst a hoard of positive reviews) had complained that since the protagonist was a Muslim cop, she had hoped to learn something about the law enforcement aspects of Sharia Law. Hmmm. Knowing that Sharia Law encompasses much more than anything related to law enforcement and that I was sure that an American cop would enforce American law regardless of his/her faith (with the exception perhaps of the theocratic-ally oriented evangelicals now hoping to dominate our lives.) So I immediately downloaded a copy to my Kindle (instant gratification is a wonderful thing.)

Holding Out For a Hero

Kelsie Newman meets the man of her dreams at the beginning of a really, really bad day, so excuse her for not recognizing him. Good thing she s a smart girl and a quick learner. When he rescues her from her Good Samaritan act gone bad later that same day, she doesn t make the same mistake twice.
"...a wonderfully talented author who knows what readers want to read." Diana Coyle ~ Night Owl Reviews
My Thoughts
“Holding Out For a Hero” is a quirky, romantic, and a bit thought provoking story.
Kelsie was a very likeable character and had some really funny sarcastic humor. I highly enjoyed reading about her and her little adventure. I could really relate to her as well. I mean who hasn’t daydreamed at least once about a handsome young man sweeping them off their feet and riding off into the sunset.
I won’t give away the name of the hero right away, but Kelsie refers to him as McDreamy, which I find really funny. He was definitely a hero in every sense of the word as well as very charming.
Another reason I like this story is because of the thoughts on what really makes a hero a hero. You’ll just have to read it to find out what I’m talking about and its free in both kindle and nook format so what could be better?

Suddenly, she has a purpose for her gift, as her vision gives her the ability to find kidnapped children telepathically. But is this a blessing or a curse? When Mariah’s fourth finding is filmed by the FBI and the recording is stolen and sold to a broadcast journalist, Mariah’s worst nightmare becomes a reality. She is acclaimed worldwide as a saint and messenger from God—and vilified as the Antichrist whose powers must be quelled. Meanwhile, another government agency has its own covert agenda for Mariah…. Caribbean Moon (A Manny Williams Thriller)

This is written in the tradition of Connelly, Patterson of old, and JA Konrath.

Small-town detective workaholic, Manny Williams is thrilled with the prospect of finally taking the long-awaited vacation he had promised his wife, Louise.

The couple’s exotic getaway begins in sunny San Juan, Puerto Rico, by attending the June wedding of a fellow Lansing police officer, followed with an incredible week-long Southern Caribbean cruise on the glamorous Ocean Duchess. Tropical paradise appears to be a perfect recipe for desperately needed R and R...until the first dead body.

A bizarre, seemingly random murder in their posh San Juan Hotel, and the heinous cruise ship deaths of two of Lansing’s law enforcement family, brings Manny, and his unique skills, out of cruise mode and head-long into the FBI-led investigation. Manny soon discovers that in this killer’s twisted perception nothing is off limits, prompting a race against time that could cost him everything.

If you like edge-of-your-seat thrillers laced with humor, you ll love this!
The ending will catch you totally off-guard! I highly recommend this FIVE STAR novel and guarantee you will be looking forward, as I am to DECEITFUL MOON by RICK MURCER. Detective Manny Williams and his partner Sophie Lee take us on another ride in a taught detective novel.

Water for Elephants

As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie.
It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.
Based on the acclaimed bestseller, Water for Elephants presents an unexpected romance in a uniquely compelling setting. Veterinary school student Jacob (Pattinson) meets and falls in love with Marlena (Witherspoon), a star performer in a circus of a bygone era. They discover beauty amidst the world of the Big Top, and come together through their compassion for a special elephant.
Against all odds — including the wrath of Marlena’s charismatic but dangerous husband, August (Waltz) — Jacob and Marlena find lifelong love.

The Mill River Recluse

Disfigured by the blow of an abusive husband, and suffering her entire life with severe social anxiety disorder, the widow Mary McAllister spends almost sixty years secluded in a white marble mansion overlooking the town of Mill River, Vermont. Her links to the outside world are few: the mail, the media, an elderly priest with a guilty habit of pilfering spoons, and a bedroom window with a view of the town below.

Most longtime residents of Mill River consider the marble house and its occupant peculiar, though insignificant, fixtures. An arsonist, a covetous nurse, and the endearing village idiot are among the few who have ever seen Mary. Newcomers to Mill River--a police officer and his daughter and a new fourth grade teacher--are also curious about the reclusive old woman. But only Father Michael O Brien knows Mary and the secret she keeps--one that, once revealed, will change all of their lives forever.

The Mill River Recluse is a story of triumph over tragedy, one that reminds us of the value of friendship and the ability of love to come from the most unexpected of places.

Suspicions: a novel of suspense

If you like Mary Higgins Clark, you ll like Suspicions.

When a neighbor boy is kidnapped for ransom, Stacey Hunter is stunned to discover that circumstantial evidence points to her husband. Not able to believe he could be involved in such a horrifying crime, she sets out to discover who is really behind the kidnapping.

Complicating Stacey s efforts is the odd behavior of her supervisor, Patricia Summers, who has taken a keen interest in Stacey s husband. Though uncertain of her husband s faithfulness, Stacey presses on with her investigation to flush out the kidnapper and is faced with losing everything she loves, as well as her own life.
Suspicions does not contain any profanity or sexual content and is appropriate for all ages. It is 72,000 words long, which is approximately 275 pages.
This book is a real page turner. My stomach was in knots because, as a mother myself, I could relate to the feelings of the young boy's mother. It is easy to keep track of all the characters because of the author's descriptive way she presents each one. I definitely recommend Christine's other book "No Way Out" as it was even more suspenceful and had some suprising twists. I look forward to reading more of her stories.
This book was good from the first page I read. It was very real and something that could happen to anyone at anytime. Each page was intriguing and made me want to read more. The characters were all very well written with some characters you love and some you hate. There was no doubt who each character was as they were described very well. I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to reading Christine's other 3 books as well as any books which may be written in the future.

Second Son (Kindle Single)

In this new short story from 1 New York Times bestselling author Lee Child, available exclusively as an eBook, a young Jack Reacher knows how to finish a fight so it stays finished. He knows how to get the job done so it stays done. And, in one of his earliest challenges, he knows that his analytical brain is just as important as his impressive brawn.

Okinawa, 1974. Even at thirteen, Jack Reacher knows how to outwit and overpower anyone who stands in his way. And as the new kid in town, that’s pretty much everyone. His family has come to the Pacific with his father, who’s preparing for a top-secret Marine Corps operation. After receiving a rude welcome from the local military brats, Reacher and his older brother, Joe, intend to teach them a lesson they won’t forget. But it’s soon clear that there’s more at stake than pride. When his family’s future appears to come crumbling down, it’s the youngest Reacher who rises to the occasion with all the decisive cunning and bravura that will one day be his deadly trademark.

Second Son also includes a thrilling excerpt from Lee Child’s forthcoming novel, The Affair.
I am a great fan of Lee Child and Jack Reacher - but I was greatly disappointed by SECOND SON. I expected it to be a novela at the price but this, although containing some insights into the character we love, really could have been included as back-story in one of the existing novels, or the next one. I feel we already have a well rounded view of Jack Reacher's background/motivation and this is not only unnecessary, but blatant merchandising. I for one certainly don't want to see a spin off series of Jack Reacher as a kid - the adult version is much more interesting. Well written, as to be expected, and I will still be buying the next in the real series - hoping that it will make up for this. I think it should be clearer that this is more of an insert than a book and the price dropped accordingly to avoid readers' disappointment!

Food Inc.: A Participant Guide: How Industr...

Food, Inc. is guaranteed to shake up our perceptions of what we eat. This powerful documentary deconstructing the corporate food industry in America was hailed by Entertainment Weekly as ?more than a terrific movie?it’s an important movie.” Aided by expert commentators such as Michael Pollan and Eric Schlosser, the film poses questions such as: Where has my food come from, and who has processed it? What are the giant agribusinesses and what stake do they have in maintaining the status quo of food production and consumption? How can I feed my family healthy foods affordably?
Expanding on the film’s themes, the book Food, Inc. will answer those questions through a series of challenging essays by leading experts and thinkers. This book will encourage those inspired by the film to learn more about the issues, and act to change the world.
Just saw the film and ordered book. I don't understand why people think organic is so expensive. It's not the same product as the nonorganic version. Scientifically speaking,. it's a different substance. It has more nutrition in it. And why do people think healthy food takes all this time to prepare? You just eat a peach, not a candy bar. Smart choices don't cost more time - they just require a different mentality than buying into the corporate-controlled marketing mindset. And staying out of the supermarket. You want to talk about spending too much - the supermarket is The Worst Place to go. It's ALL about making you spend money. On soda, on chips. Please also read The End of Overeating by Kessler about hypersaturated foods supermarkets always try to sell you.

Hush
What s your greatest fear?

It s criminal profiler Ivy Dunlap s job to unravel the psyches of the most dangerous men alive. None haunts her dreams more than the killer who took her son s life sixteen years ago, then silently disappeared into the dark. Now an urgent request for help from the Chicago police has reawakened Ivy s greatest nightmare. The Madonna Murderer has returned to fulfill his calling. This time Ivy understands the killer and will face her greatest fear to stop him from killing again.

Publishers Weekly

Few serial killers penned by suspense writers today are as warped or as fully realized as the Madonna Murderer, who preys on newborn baby boys and their unwed mothers. As if the crime itself isn t bad enough, the killer leaves a musical snow globe that plays Hush, Little Baby in the infant s crib as his calling card. It has been nearly two decades since Ivy Dunlap and her infant son were victimized by the Madonna Murderer. Unbeknownst to the killer, Ivy survived the assault. Her baby didn t. Now a respected criminal psychologist, Ivy is called into service by the Chicago P.D. when the killer resurfaces after 16 years of dormancy. Her personal interest in the case takes on a sharper edge when she learns that her partner, Detective Max Irving, has a son named Ethan who is the same age her child would have been had he survived. When Ivy tries to rattle the Madonna Murderer by publishing a dead-baby letter in the newspaper, the killer becomes more daring; he befriends Ethan, sends Ivy a chunk of his skin bearing a tattoo and expands his profile of victims. Although some readers may be turned off by the novel s graphic nature, a wealth of procedural detail, a heart-thumping finale and two scarred but indelible protagonists make this a first-rate debut.

Play Dead

Her USA Today bestseller, SLEEP TIGHT, was called compelling and real - a great read, by Andrea Kane. Guaranteed to keep you awake at night, raved Lisa Jackson. With her newest novel, Anne Frasier will really take your breath away... Watch your back, Elise. No one understands the dark side of Savannah better than homicide detective Elise Sandburg. As an infant, she was thought to be the daughter of a famous root doctor-and was abandoned in an ancient Low Country cemetery. Growing up, she was haunted by her possible connection to the local Gullah culture-with its spells and voodoo. Now, however, there s a twisted killer on the loose, and the city is gripped by terror. Someone is using a substance that leaves its victims in a state that mimics death. As their bodies slip into an irreversible paralysis, their minds remain fully, shockingly awake. Before you wake up dead. Step by step, Elise s relentless chase for the killer draws her straight back into the world she most fears. And now, to stop a murderer, she must confront the truth about her own past in ways she never could have imagined...

Publishers Weekly

Frasier (Sleep Tight, etc.) has perfected the art of making a reader s skin crawl, which is evident from this book s very first scene, in which a medical examiner discovers in the midst of an autopsy that the cadaver he s working on is really a live person. Set in Savannah, Ga., this exceptional thriller follows the hunt for the deranged person who s drugging people so that their minds remain wide awake even as their bodies resemble death. The creepiness factor increases when Frasier introduces homicide detective Elise Sandburg, who was abandoned in a cemetery as a baby and who knows Gullah spells and culture. Elise s partner, anti-social David Gould, is equally strange; his past holds secrets so dark he should be under psychiatric care. Formerly with the FBI, Gould currently lives in a rundown, foul-smelling apartment and sleeps with a prostitute who works for a voodoo priestess. As the two detectives follow leads to the priestess and the former college professor who researched the drug, they forge a tentative bond and come to terms with their own troubled pasts. Frasier s characters are not only fully realized, but fascinating to boot, and she evokes the dark, mystical side of Savannah with precision and skill. Appropriately, this unsettling tale closes with a grim children s rhyme and a spell for Elise s Follow-Me-Boy Mojo.

Finding Grace

Grace is seventeen. She is bold, intelligent...and unmarried. In the eyes of her family and her mountain born neighbors, she is hopelessly willful. But she is determined to forge her own path, come what may. When her parents try to force her hand in marriage, she flees, seeking out her brother and his wife, who once watched over her. Settling down with them, she finds a new life...and possible romance with a handsome neighbor. But the past will come back to haunt her, possibly destroying the happiness she has worked so hard to find.

Set in the days of the prohibition, 1927 to be precise, Grace Langdon lives with her brothers and extremely strict parents in rural Virginia. It's not a happy life. Her older brother Jack, her only friend, is shunned by the family after leaving with a girl the parents didn't approve of, and Grace wants out as well. One of her favourite books is Jane Eyre, and she doesn't just want to marry because it's what you're supposed to do. Like Jane, she wants to marry for love, and be strong and independent.

One day, Charlie - a boy she remembers from her childhood - comes back, and he seems really sweet. At first. Getting to know him better, she soon realises that he's not her Mr. Rochester, and eventually has to flee to avoid being married off to him by her parents. Grace goes to find her brother and his wife in Chicago. By chance, she happens upon Henry Shaw at the train station, a man who knows her brother. A man with a reputation for being a womaniser, but who is darn attractive, and who also can't seem to stop thinking about Grace ...
Two things that immediately stand out as reasons to love this novel: 1) Jane Eyre, which is quoted every now and again, and 2) Richard Armitage.

Knowing Sarah Pawley is a fan of Richard Armitage (her participation in this year's FanstRAvaganza gave that one away! ;)), there is no way I can read the description of Henry and the frequent mentions of his voice and not picture/hear that man.

I love the summer, especially the summer here in Toronto. There is so much amazing stuff to do around the city and throughout Ontario. Unfortunately, extremely hot weather (above 40C with the humidity) and getting sick partway through the month means I haven't been able to do all I had planned for the summer. Hopefully the weather will cooperate for August because I have a lot I want to do before my husband and daughter head off to school.

One good thing about the hot weather keeping us indoors a bit more means more reading! One book of note that I read (and will post the review for soon) is A Year of Living Generously by Lawrence Scanlan. He spent twelve months working with twelve different charities both at home (Ontario) and abroad. This book is eye-opening and inspiring. He showcases the work that so many people are doing to make this world a better place and how people like you and I can get involved and really make a difference.

Elizabeth Street

Based on true events, ELIZABETH STREET is a multigenerational saga that opens in an Italian village in the 1900 s, and crosses the ocean to New York s Lower East Side. At the heart of the novel is Giovanna, whose family is targeted by the notorious Black Hand -the precursor to the Mafia. Elizabeth Street brings to light a period in history when Italian immigrant neighborhoods lived in fear of Black Hand extortion and violence-a reality that defies the romanticized depiction of the Mafia. Here, the author reveals the merciless terror of the Black Hand-and the impact their crimes had on her family. Giovanna is based on Fabiano s great-grandmother, and the book s heroes and villains - such as Lieutenant Petrosino, the crusading cop and Lupo the Wolf, a cold-blooded criminal - are drawn from real life in this thrilling tale. While set in a dynamic historical context, Elizabeth Street is, above all, the dramatic story of the heroine, Giovanna, and how she triumphed over tragedy.

About the Author
Laurie Fabiano loves her family and all things Italian. She has dedicated her career to marketing and event production for non-profit organizations empowering others to share their life stories and raising hundreds of millions of dollars on behalf of those in need. This book, her first, is her story. Laurie lives in Hoboken, New Jersey with her husband Joe and their daughter Siena.
Now that I have finished reading Elizabeth Street, I miss the characters and wish to be in their lives again. That is because the author depicted the characters in such a vivid and clear way, that I became emotionally involved with them. I don't know if the novel is historical fiction, a detective story, or a story about the human condition - all of the above, actually. While immersed in this novel, I felt the wonderful warmth of an Italian family; the strength and courage of a mother and other characters; and the suspense of a kidnapping. I could see, in my mind, New York City in the early 1900's. The author obviously did extensive and impeccable research. Her greatest strength, though, is her ability to tell a beautifully written and fascinating story. I do wish there were more novels like this one!

Untouchable

In his first novel, UNTOUCHABLE, Scott O Connor speaks softly and somehow manages to make something beautiful of unspeakable matters--like the gruesome mop-up after someone has taken a gun to his head. These are the matters that fall to David Darby, a strapping fellow with an armful of tattoos and a sensitive attitude toward his job as a trauma site technician. If Darby s profession has made him something of an untouchable, his young son has become a pariah at school because he refuses to speak, a self-imposed punishment after the death of his mother. ( He had, he s convinced, made her sick and sad. ) O Connor tells a wisp of a story, but in a voice so insistently stirring, you want to lean in close to catch every word.
--New York Times Book Review
It is the autumn of 1999. A year has passed since Lucy Darby s unexpected death, leaving her husband David and son Whitley to mend the gaping hole in their lives. David, a trauma-site cleanup technician, spends his nights expunging the violent remains of strangers, helping their families to move on, though he is unable to do the same. Whitley – an 11 year-old social pariah known simply as The Kid – hasn t spoken since his mother s death. Instead, he communicates through a growing collection of notebooks, living in a safer world of his own silent imagining.

The Help

The New York Times Best Seller, The Help, is an inspirational novel that takes the reader into life in the Deep South in the 1960s. Written by Mississippi native Kathryn Stockett, the novel, which takes place in Jackson, is a fictitious tale of three amazing women whose drive to start a movement forever changes a town and the way women view each other. The Help is a story about the rules we abide by and the ones that we don't.
Recently turned major motion picture, The Help will be released in theaters on August 12, 2011. Filming for the movie took place in Greenwood, MS and Fondren in Jackson, MS. Kathryn Stockett always knew that she wanted The Help movie to be filmed in the actual setting of the novel. She explains this in this article. Stockett was quoted in the article saying that her "heart would break" if it was filmed anywhere but Mississippi.
The Fairview mansion, as mentioned in The Help on page 148, was host to all of the film's stars while they were filming in Fondren. The Fairview innkeepers and staff were honored to meet stars from the film such as Emma Stone (Skeeter), Bryce Dallas Howard (Hilly), Ahna O'Reilly (Elizabeth Leefolt), Anna Camp (Jolene French), Chris Lowell (Stuart Whitworth), Tate Taylor (director and childhood friend of Stockett), and many of the film's producers.

While filming in Jackson, the whole town was abuzz with excitement. Many locals even found their 15 minutes of fame as extras in the film. The filming took place in the middle of a sweltering Mississippi summer and many of downtown Fondren's shops and houses in Greenwood were remodeled to fit the time of the film.
